Graphs make vertical patterns visible

An atmospheric profile places altitude on the vertical axis and a measured variable on the horizontal axis. Look first for overall direction, turning points, steep changes, and intervals that stay nearly constant.

Compare more than one variable

Temperature may reverse direction between layers, while pressure continues to decrease. Comparing two graphs prevents an incorrect claim based on one variable. A complete analysis names the interval and uses values or trends as evidence.

Scientific explanations connect evidence to a cause

A claim answers the question. Evidence comes from the data. Reasoning explains why the evidence supports the claim using a science idea, such as ozone absorbing ultraviolet energy or gravity concentrating air near the surface.
