Station models compress observations

A station model places several observations around one location: temperature, dew point, pressure, cloud cover, wind direction and speed, and present weather. The wind staff points toward the direction the wind comes from. A simplified key is necessary to decode the symbols.

Isobars connect equal pressure

Isobars are lines connecting locations with the same air pressure. Closely spaced isobars show a stronger pressure gradient and often stronger wind. Closed contours can reveal high- and low-pressure centers.

Patterns reveal fronts

Meteorologists compare neighboring stations. A narrow zone with rapid temperature, dew-point, and wind-direction changes may mark a front. Pressure patterns and precipitation observations add supporting evidence.
