The AQI communicates pollution risk

The Air Quality Index converts concentrations of major pollutants into categories and health guidance. Ground-level ozone and fine particles are common concerns. Sensitive groups may need precautions at lower levels than the general population.

Different indices measure different hazards

The UV Index communicates potential harm from ultraviolet radiation. Heat Index estimates how hot conditions feel when humidity limits evaporative cooling. These are not interchangeable with air temperature or the AQI.

Monitoring supports stewardship

Sensors and forecasts help communities issue guidance. Individual actions can reduce exposure, while community choices can reduce emissions and improve resilience. Wildfire smoke can sharply raise particle pollution even far from the fire.
