Hurricanes contain several hazards
Tropical cyclones draw energy from warm ocean water and release energy as water vapor condenses. Hazards include storm surge, large waves, extreme rainfall, inland flooding, damaging wind, tornadoes, and power loss. Impacts extend far from the eye and coast.
Floodwater hides danger
Flood depth and current can be difficult to judge. Water can conceal washed-out roads, debris, contamination, and electrical hazards. Move away from flood-prone areas when directed and never drive through flooded roads.
Winter precipitation depends on vertical temperature
Snow remains frozen through a cold atmospheric column. Sleet melts and refreezes before reaching the ground. Freezing rain melts aloft and freezes on contact with a surface below freezing. Ice can make travel and power systems dangerous.
