Risk combines more than the storm

A hazard is a potentially damaging event or condition. Exposure describes people and property in harm's way. Vulnerability describes how easily they can be harmed. Risk can increase even when the physical hazard stays the same.

Preparedness and mitigation differ

Preparedness includes plans, alerts, supplies, drills, and communication before an event. Mitigation reduces future impacts through stronger buildings, drainage, protected floodplains, shade, cleaner air, or other long-term changes.

Effective messages are specific

A useful message names the hazard, location, timing, expected impacts, people who may need extra support, and concrete actions. It cites evidence, acknowledges uncertainty, and points to official updates. Avoid sensational language.
